Samuel Harrison (1684-1776), the eldest son of Mary Ward (d.1738) and Samuel Harrison (1645-1724), was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1684. In 1710, he married Jemima Williams (1645-1724) and the couple settled on land which Samuel eventually inherited from his father at the Mountain (now West Orange, New Jersey). He grew up in Middletown Township, Monmouth County, and in 1776 enlisted in the Continental Army.
